Vroon Shipping

Vroon Shipping

Background

Vroon Shipping was experiencing problems with the electrical power supplies on their ship, the Vos Sentinel, an offshore standby vehicle. It was unable to leave Montrose harbor without a back-up power supply. Vroon Shipping contracted Quartzelec to provide an initial assessment of the electrical supply problem.

The Project

During investigations, Quartzelec established that the alternator was unbalanced between phases and would require removal from the ship for the necessary repairs to be made.

Quartzelec engineers worked alongside the Vroon shipping and shore side staff to collect permits, disconnect the machine (electrically and mechanically), cut out hatches and add eye pads. Handling equipment was also fitted for lifting.

The vessel was fitted with a temporary generator of the same rating complete with a fuel tank and assessed for sea worthiness by the Lloyds Class Surveyor, allowing the vessel to sail that day.

The alternator was stripped in the Quartzelec workshop; the fault was identified and repaired. The machine was then overhauled, re-assembled and tested.

At a later date, the alternator was then re-installed and re-commissioned to the satisfaction of the Ship’s superintendent.
