Quartzelec, a leading independent engineering service provider, is delivering the £4m Mechanical and Electrical elements of a new StayCity Aparthotel project on Mason Street in Manchester. Working again with Bardsley Construction as the main contractor, this exciting 40‑week project will see 224‑bedroom units and public areas built and fitted out, to an exceptionally high standard, within a new eight-storey steel frame and brick clad structure.
The new StayCity Aparthotel has been designed by architects Simpson Haugh Partners, with SHED acting as the structural engineers, and takes much of its internal design from the recently completed StayCity Aparthotel development in Dublin. The build comprises 48 one-bedroomed and 176 studio apartments, a reception area, café and gym; all designed and completed to an exceptionally high and modern finish.
The £4m M&E element of the Mason Street project was awarded to Quartzelec in late 2018 by Bardsley Construction and is now nearing completion at the end of 2019/early 2020. Both companies have previously and successfully worked together on several large projects, the most recent being the highly praised six storey Hannah Court building, providing 103 en‑suite student studio apartments in Matilda Street, Sheffield and this tried-and-tested working relationship will be important on this project.
“This is another significant and prestigious project for us and will only help enhance our reputation for reliability and quality of delivery,” stated Ian Jones, Quartzelec’s lead on the project. “We have a team of between 24-36 experienced and highly qualified mechanical and electrical craftspeople on site during the project including two project managers, one each to oversee both the M&E elements, and each have a dedicated, full‑time project supervisor and a full team reporting to them. Projects of this size and nature also mean we are able to provide some real, practical and long-term experience to our growing team of apprentices as they get to contribute to a complex and detailed project from start to finish plus put all their new skill into practice on the site.”
Working to a detailed and hi-specification design that features modern chrome fixtures and quality fittings, Quartzelec is responsible for delivering all the electrical installation elements. This includes installing an estimated 200 kilometres of cabling for all the internal and external general power requirements along with all the main and emergency lighting, fire and security cabling, plus all data and TV installations. The team will also be fitting all primary fixtures and undertaking the integration of all cooking and white goods. The mechanical elements include all above ground water installation, kitchen plumbing and sanitaryware plus the heat recovery, ventilation and sophisticated control systems via a Building Management System servicing both the individual apartments and the public space services.
“It’s a pleasure to be working again with this experienced team from Quartzelec,” added Roger Linton, Contracts Manager for this project at Bardsley Construction. “With such a small building footprint, an exceptionally tight delivery timeframe and some challenging project requirements, particularly given the central city location, being able to depend on the flexibility, support and strong working relationship we already have means together we should easily be able to successfully deliver all aspects of this project, keep to the agreed budget, manage any construction issues and hit all the agreed construction milestones so that units will be available from the start of 2020 as planned.”
