Royal Albert Edward Infirmary District General Hospital

Royal Albert Edward Infirmary District General Hospital

Project Summary

Service:

HV/LV Installation

Duration:

< 1 Week

Background

Close collaboration and hard work in equal measures paid off over a November weekend, 2014 on a complex HV/LV installation at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan, Lancashire.

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) is the provider of acute hospital services to the people of the Wigan Borough and surrounding area. The Royal Albert Edward Infirmary is the main district general hospital site, located in central Wigan hosting the Accident and Emergency Department. Quartzelec have also carried out extensive work for the Trust’s Wrightington Hospital, a specialist centre of orthopaedic excellence.

The Project

Time being of the essence in order to minimise disruption, the project started on a Friday evening when the hospital’s three substations were transferred on to ten temporary generators whilst the HV supply was isolated to enable the HV switchgear to be replaced.

Transformer TX1 was replaced, as was the non-essential LV switch board in substation 1. The Quartzelec team worked throughout the weekend and the work – representing phase 1 of the project – was completed at 5pm on the Sunday.

Exact planning and a cohesive team approach ensured the switchover and new equipment installation was carried out smoothly.
